Die Geschichte spielt in einem englischen Herrenhaus, das von einem Geheimnis umhüllt ist. Die Gesellschafterin Sara Leeson, eine geheimnisvolle Frau, versteckt nach dem Tod ihrer Herrin, Mrs. Treverton, einen Brief im unbewohnten Flügel des Anwesens, bevor sie selbst spurlos verschwindet. 15 Jahre später wird die Tochter von Mrs. Treverton, frisch verheiratet, krank und eine Pflegerin aus der Nachbarschaft wird engagiert. Die Pflegerin, eine geheimnisvolle Frau namens Mrs. Hester, fällt durch ihr seltsames Verhalten und ihr übermäßiges Interesse an ihrer Patientin auf, was die junge Frau und ihre Familie misstrauisch werden lässt. Die Geschichte entfaltet sich mit der Erkundung der Vergangenheit und der Gegenwart, wobei die Beziehungen zwischen den Charakteren und die Suche nach dem verschwundenen Brief die Handlung vorantreiben.
