War and Peace Vol. 1 (Dole Translation)
by Leo Tolstoy
'War and Peace Vol. 1 (Dole Translation)' Summary
War and Peace tells the story of five aristocratic families during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. The novel opens with the arrival of Pierre Bezukhov, an illegitimate son of a wealthy count, in Moscow. Pierre is a kind and naive young man who is quickly drawn into the social and political intrigues of the city. He falls in love with Natasha Rostova, a beautiful and vivacious young woman, but their relationship is complicated by Pierre's illegitimacy and Natasha's flirtatious nature. Meanwhile, Andrei Bolkonsky, a brilliant and ambitious young officer, is fighting in the war against Napoleon. He is wounded and captured, but is eventually rescued by Pierre. Andrei falls in love with Natasha's sister, Marya, but their relationship is also complicated by Andrei's pride and Marya's religious devotion. The novel follows the lives of these characters and their families as they navigate the challenges of war, love, and family life. Tolstoy's writing is both epic and intimate, and he paints a vivid and detailed portrait of Russian society during a time of great upheaval.Book Details
